Trips & excursions
If you are on holiday in one of the most beautiful natural regions in Europe, you can therefore also experience a lot of nature, but the Hochwald region offers even more. Here you will find our leisure tips for summer and winter.
Nature, cycling and hiking
National Park Hunsrück – Hochwald
Website: https://www.nlphh.de/
The biological hotspot between Celts and Romans.
The Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park covers an area of 10,000 hectares across the high altitudes of the Hunsrück. The Federal Agency for Nature Conservation already classifies the area as a ‘hotspot region for biological diversity’. Rustic forests and a rich variety of flora and fauna characterise the landscape.
The landscape is characterised by low mountain ranges with seemingly endless forest areas and separates it from the surrounding, well-known wine-growing regions, the Moselle, Rhine, Nahe and Saar.

Cycling in Wadern
It is a heavenly pleasure when the wind blows around your nose and the movement harmonises body and soul. You certainly won’t find crowds of people or stuffy traffic jams in this area. The really exciting thing is the landscape with a very high proportion of contiguous forests compared to the rest of Germany.

Wolfspark Werner Freund
Website: https://www.wolfspark-wernerfreund.de/
Merzig owes its name ‘City of Wolves’ to an unusual man – the animal and behavioural researcher Werner Freund. He lived with the wild animals for more than 30 years as a ‘wolf among wolves’ in a way that is unique in the world. He shared their daily lives and raised each of the wolves with his own hands. In this way, he gained the trust of the various packs. It was not the animal that adapted to its master’s behaviour – as is usual with dogs. It was Werner Freund who analysed and understood the social structures within the packs in years of field studies. After almost 20 years at Freund’s side, Tatjana Schneider is continuing his life’s work in his spirit.
